I was just reading vintagewatchstraps, and they mentioned a watch still being radioactive after the lume was removed. Another, less understood concern is contamination from decay products. I wouldn't consider scraping the old paint off or handling it dry under any circumstances. The greatest dangers are inhaling or ingesting dried paint, or contaminating yourself or your work space and then rubbing your eyes, touching your mouth, etc. Phosphors are stimulated by different forms of energy, but I believe strontium aluminate will work with radium. Fresh radium lume is said to be visible from several yards away. The result still requires your eyes to adjust to the dark in order to see. I just used a dry brush to apply a fine coat of powder on top of the hands of an old clock (very hot on the Geiger counter). I tried a couple different phosphors and green Strontium Aluminate Europium Dysprosium powder. I have a variety of Strontium Aluminate powders and more exotic phosphors.
Some claim that putting a fine coat of new luminous paint over the old dials will do the job. Modern Strontium Aluminate powders glow much more brightly.
