Remote bricking and loss of purchases due to account problems.Oculus has issues with right to repair, and the Oculus Quest 2 has problems with: What about used Vives? Those are budget-friendly, incredibly reliable, super modular, and one of the most upgradable options out there, as I detail in my other comment. I do not know nearly as much about WMR, since it doesn't support my operating system, but I hear it is a good option too. So, used Vive and used WMR are probably your best options. If you have a an older or less powerful computer, the Vive's lower resolution is also easier to drive at native quality than the higher resolution of some other headsets. The Vive, using outside-in tracking, also tracks very well with lots of precision, and you can move your hands behind your back without losing tracking. It also seems to be built well in general, so I think my Vive will last for a pretty long time! This is unlike the Index, which I have heard has much more quality control problems. It's also very reliable, since most things can be replaced, even including the 3-in-1 cable which they still sell replacements for online! The replaceable cable especially impressed me, since many of my things have failed due to the cable in the past. For one, it's very modular and upgradable: the Index HMD and controllers are both backwards compatible with a Vive setup, and the Vive can be upgraded with full-body tracking and haptics as well, in a way that works well since all go through the SteamVR runtime. There many are other things I love about the Vive too.

It cost $250 off Craigslist, plus about $34 for a new head strap and adhesive base station mounts, since mine came without a head strap and without screws for the mounts… plus it would have taken me too long to get a drill anyway. I chose a used Vive myself, primarily because it natively supports Linux. Go used! Used Vives and used WMR headsets are quite budget friendly. Some run into an issue with needing DisplayPort available, for example, on newer headsets.

Make sure your computer is good enough to run PC VR with the appropriate ports available for the headset.

You mentioned no specs so I'm trying not to assume anything. See if you can find everything together in a good deal.Īnother thing to keep in mind that the Oculus Quest headsets are basically the only standalone VR system available for consumers. The used market will sell headsets alone and you may be spending more than you'd like to piece the rest of it together. Just remember to factor in any necessary extra parts like base stations if the brand needs them and controllers. Your best bet currently would be trying to find a decent used headset. The only thing we even have some kind of word on is DecaGear's offering at $450 USD, but it's an unproven brand and system as of now. The future could hold something different, but VR is still an expensive technology. The other companies have to sell at cost or profit. Facebook is using it's financial position to eat the cost of the headset to make up for it in other ways. Schedule an AMA!
